Since then every winning coach, in every sport, not just basketball, has adhered to those basic rules.....(I'll paraphrase a little bit).....No bad mouthing the team (coach, players or owners) in the media.....NO holding out for any reason.....NO negotiating for more money in the media.....of course Red had a few smaller ones (like the famous pancake eating fine for Sam Jones) but, basically THAT was it......very simple......Even Vince Lombardi used a similar set of rules. He even took a 16th round draft pick quarterback named Bart Starr and made him a hall of famer.
Bill Parcells won two super bowls with the Giants using a similar system THEN brought the Patriots to a super bowl appearance (and near win) with the same philosophy.
Danny Ainge has caught onto the 'Team System" idea as GM and built a title team a fgew years ago with the Garnett led teams. Now he's in the process of doing it again.....
NOW for MY interpretation of the theory...up-dated.......The most important part of the team is the guy(s) who get the rebounds BUT...closely behind is the POINT GUARD who distributes the ball to the guys who work hard to get in the open for an easy shot......BOB COUSY called it "dishing out the sugar." Red theorized.....if the point guard just looks for HIS shot then you've got four guys just standing around doing next to nothing.... I BELIEVE that THIS Celtic team was in need of a point guard......Isaiah Thomas was a great scorer BUT...THAT is not winning team basketball. You'll remember that the only game the Celtics won in last years playoffs was the game Thomas didn't play because of an injury. SIX MEN scored in double figures for the Celtics.
ALSO......Thomas broke all three of Red's rules when he....bad mouthed a teammate, then the coach and, worst of all...negotiated his salary (a year ahead of time) in the media.....Remember his famous "demand"......The Celtics will have to back up the Brink's truck for me.
I predicted, then, that Thomas would be history. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy and a gifted basketball player BUT...not in the winning Celtic/Auerbach mold.
Now for Bill Belichick....Every player that he basically got rid of violated the "holdout" rule, negotiating in the media rule or the bad mouthing the team rule.....Ty Law, Assante Samuel, Lawyer Malloy, Richard Seymore.....etc. Bill only gave in ONCE and that was to Seymore who rewarded him by pushing Vince Wulfork to do also hold out and complain in the media. Wilfork kept quiet and was rewarded by Belichick while Semore was traded and never "really" heard from again.
As far as NOW having to cope with a "FORTY YEAR OLD QUARTERBACK," as the media likes to use...to create a story line that is pure BULL****. let me repeat....It's about the system.
It is NOW time to admit...BELICHICK is a football genius and has the system that Tom Brady
thrives in....Brady knows the system, Belichick gets him all the help he needs to implement the system providing more "options" for Brady's talent.....Let me mention here.....LEADERSHIP is right at the top of the list.....Lest anybody forget.....ALL the players on this team were in grammar school when Brady was winning super bowls.....HE is THEIR boyhood idol.
